Editorial Studies Unit - Level 4

Editorial Illustration constitutes a large area of the illustration sphere, which is continuing to increase in size catering to the dictates of society and targeted to appeal to both general and subject specific audiences and readership.

It is important to understand the editorial policy of a particular newspaper or magazine, thereby engaging with the identity of the publication, so the publication does not look out of place.

The speed of the illustrator is fast and furious.

The role of an illustrator is to interpret the given text of an article and to generate a number of differing ideas around it, which entails visual thinking.

Methods to convey a point which must enhance the text:
Subversion
Visual metaphor
Satire

Activity 1

From the selection of editorial articles taken from a selection of newspapers and pereiodicals you are required to to choose one to work with as the basis for your work.

Analyse the text
Think about its potential in terms of the possible visual content

Look at back issues of the selected publication- familiarising yourself with the editorial policy of the publication

Look at other illustrators working in this field

Participate in Visualisation workshops to generate a range of rapid ideas that rely on clever conceptual thinking.

Evaluate the strongest, most thought provoking idea and develop in a rough, to take through to the finished artwork.

The format and proportion of the artwork will be determined by the existing pictorial area of the article and the choice of medium is left to your discretion.
