Brief
Building upon skills within Introductory Studies, this unit focuses upon perception, observations and visual thinking related to various drawing practices, based around a series of themes.
For this, you are required to select one of the specified themes and to work continually throughout the unit on the selected theme in response to a number of approaches, which are designed to expand your preconceptions of drawing. This will entail working individually, whilst also engaging in some practical group work, discussion and evaluation.
The themes are as follows –
Nurture Work Routines
Journeys Domesticity Utophias
Sub-Culture Resistance Classification
Whilst acknowledging the breadth of possibility within the wide-ranging themes, you are required to be original and innovative in your concepts. Contribution to group discussion and idea generation within the initial stages of the unit will help stimulate various thought processes and provide possible direction.
Your work in progress, or supporting work, should underpin the final realisations and reflect a developing sense of enquiry in terms of ideas and exploration of approach. A range of materials will be available for you to utilise fully, including access to the printroom providing exploration of mono-printing, lino-cuts, collographs and etching.
A range of workshops relating to different drawing approaches, considerations and methods will be held to inform your work which should be applied to your selected theme where appropriate, whilst various other events are planned throughout the duration of the unit to help initiate idea generation and practice, so your full participation and attendance is important – please refer to the scheme of work for more details.
Please note that you are required to submit all works produced within the respective workshops, which will be considered as part of your supporting works at assessment.
Ultimately, you are required to produce a portfolio of drawings of no fewer than 6 images related to your chosen theme. All 6 images must be primary resourced and whilst there is no restriction as to size or format, careful consideration should be given to their final presentation, which could relate back to the selected theme and provide a unifying body of work. For example, an artist’s book, an installation, 3-dimensional work, or a series of large scale drawings within a hand-bound folio etc.
Furthermore, as part of the assessment requirements for this unit, you are required to prepare a written evaluation and analysis of different drawing approaches of 500 words, which should be word processed. Critical reflection should be evident within your written evaluation coupled with attributed research and reference sources as appropriate, using the Institute referencing system, please consult the course handbook.
